Itu adalah cuplikan pidato kelulusan yang disampaikan oleh David McCullough, Jr. seorang guru pada
Wellesley High School. Ketika biasnya pidato kelulusan berisi ucapan selamat dan pujian-pujian tentang betapa hebatnya siswa-siswa yang lulus, pidato ini sedikit berbeda. Pidato ini mengingatkan dengan agak tiba-tiba bahwa kita tidaklah spesial, tidak istimewa, tidak ada apa-apanya.

And consider for a moment the bigger picture: your planet, I’ll remind you, is not the center of its solar system, your solar system is not the center of its galaxy, your galaxy is not the center of the universe. In fact, astrophysicists assure us the universe has no center; therefore, you cannot be it. Hahaha mungkin Pak David tadi sedikit lebay dalam mengambil contoh, tapi tak apa. Toh memang demikian adanya, Toh baru saja kita memberi ucapan selamat kepada spesies kita yang saat ini sudah mencapai 7 milyar! (horeeee toss!!).

Kata orang, jaman ini adalah jaman informasi. Jaman informasi ternyata juga mengubah manusia. Saya sampai lupa.. kapan terakhir kali manusia-manusia begitu berbeda dan unik di mata saya. Yang saya tahu, tiba-tiba kita semua menjadi penghuni peternakan manusia kepunyaan si mark zuckerberg, Tiba-tiba semua orang harus bercuap habis bahwa ia harus makan bakso tadi siang… dan semua orang harus tahu bentuk baksonya! Benar.. begitu tiba-tiba. Entah apa dulu Tim Berners Lee akan berpikir seperti ini ketika pertama kali menciptakan WWW. We are all want to be special, but sorry to say, we are not. If everybody is special, then we need to revise the definition of “special”.

Namun bukannya membuat down, pidato tadi bagi saya ini adalah penyemangat yang jarang ditemukan di jaman serba aneh dan instan sekarang ini. I think that’s the only kind of motivation that works on me.. er.. wait, see, i’m trying to be special again here! LOL.
